Graduation vs. Commencement

Graduation (and receipt of your diploma) occurs when you have completed all of your requirements, whereas commencement is the ceremony in May that celebrates graduation. Students finishing up coursework in the Summer are eligible to “walk” in May commencement but will not graduate until August. Students that finished coursework and graduated in December are eligible to participate in the following May commencement.

Dates and Deadlines

All students wishing to participate in commencement must apply to graduate and submit their final plan of study by the deadline stated below. Late submission may result in your name being absent from publications or ineligibility to participate in commencement.

Apply to Graduate and Submit your Final Plan of Study

After you register for your final academic semester, apply to graduate in the Student Administration System (i.e., PeopleSoft) according to the term in which you will complete your coursework [View Tutorial]. Applying to graduate lets us know that you are planning on graduating so we can include you in important email updates. Then, submit your final plan of study by the fourth week of your final semester in the academic year. (That’s the Spring semester for Summer graduates.) Submitting your plan of study early allows us to track your progress and rectify any problems (e.g., insufficient credits, unfulfilled requirements, etc.).

Electronic Submission Instructions

  1. Please be sure your plan(s) are correct.
    1. Check your Academic Requirements report to ensure that the correct psychological sciences plan of study type is listed [View Tutorial]. If it needs to be corrected, submit this online form: Change or Declare Plan of Study Type.
    2. If applicable, please be sure your double major, additional degree, and/or minor(s) are declared and appear on your transcript (except HDFS minor – see note below). Conversely, be sure to cancel any additional plans you no longer are pursuing.
  2. If you haven’t already, apply to graduate in the Student Administration System (i.e., PeopleSoft) [View Tutorial].
  3. Submit your final plan of study in the Student Administration System [View Tutorial].
    1. Navigate to your Academic Requirements report, and click the now visible Submit Final Plan of Study button.
    2. In the Comments box, be sure to list any PSYC transfer courses and non-preapproved related courses you will be using. Summer graduates should also list the summer courses they plan on taking. Essentially, everything listed as “not satisfied” needs an explanation as to how it has been or will be satisfied.
  4. Your advisor(s) will be notified, review your plan, and, if no errors are present, approve it.
  5. Your plan will be routed to the department for approval. As a component of processing your plan of study, we ask that you complete a confidential Exit Survey to help us gain information for future program planning. You will contacted (via a plan of study comment that will be sent to your UConn email address) with a link to this online Exit Survey. This confidential survey is mandatory for graduating seniors; your plan of study will not be processed until we receive your responses.
  6. Once you complete the Exit Survey, we will approve your plan of study at the departmental level, and it will be sent to Degree Audit in the registrar’s office.

Pursuing a double major, additional degree, or minor?

As long as your majors/minor(s) are declared and appear on your transcript before you submit your plan of study, you only need to submit your plan of study once (except HDFS – see note below). Please check with with your other major and/or minor for any special submission instructions. When you submit, each major/minor is routed to separately to the appropriate department, so there is a separate Comments box for each plan.

Note: Students completing a minor in HDFS should contact the HDFS Academic Advisor Kristin Van Ness at for further instruction.

In the Honors Program?

Submitting the major plan of study is different than submitting the Honors Scholar Final Plan of Study. Please refer to the Honors Program for additional Honors-specific graduation information.

Psychological Sciences Commencement Reception
